First dates can be really awkward. You want to get to know your date to see if you want to see them again, but you can’t ask incredibly personal questions, and in general, you probably don’t want to come off too serious or like you’re looking for your soul-mate on a first date. Still, you have to find something to talk about or you’re going to be staring at your date, dinner plate, or the bottom of your cocktail glass all night. Try these five essential questions to break the ice and get the conversation flowing:
1. What Are You Passionate About?
However you choose to phrase this question, finding out what your date is passionate about is a great way to open up a dialogue and start to talk about the things that are important to you. If you met online and you know a little bit about your date, choose a question about what they do for a living or one of their hobbies. That way you know you’ve brought up a topic that your date is actually interested in. For example, if your date is a veterinarian, ask them what moment or event in their life made realize they were passionate about caring for animals or wanted to work in the medical field.
2. What Qualities Are You Looking for in a Partner?
This question might sound a bit off-putting to some, but it’s actually a great question for a first date because it allows you to find out what your date is looking for and see if you might have similar ideas. You don’t have to spend 30 minutes talking about it, but it’s good information for everyone to have, and it may help you transition to other topics. It is one of the best questions to ask on a first date.
3. What Made You Decide to Try Online Dating?
If you met your date online, this is a great icebreaker. Often, people have amusing stories about what got them to try online dating, whether it was a string of ridiculously bad first dates or a relationship with a friend who forged a successful relationship via online dating.
4. Why Did Your Last Relationship End?
Another question that might sound a bit too heavy, asking your date about their last relationship will give you a good idea where they are in their life. If the person shuts down and doesn’t want to talk about it, don’t push them, but it may let you know that your date may still be hung up on an ex. Of course, you shouldn’t write your date off because of an impression like that, but keep it in mind. After all, you’ve got to protect yourself while getting to know someone.
5. What’s Your Favorite Movie?
Finding out what your first date’s favorite movie is isn’t all that important, but it gives you a great starting point to explore mutual interests with your date. If you know you’re dating a music fan, ask about their favorite album or a new song they’ve really been into. If you still don’t know what questions to ask on a first date, talking about favorite movies and artists is an excellent choice.
